Personally I love Metro UI in Windows 8. However if you want to turn it off (even temporarily) there is easy way to do it:

Download MetroSwitch and disable Metro in Windows 8 with a simple mouse click. Please note that you will need to log off and log back on for changes to fully take effect.

MetroSwitch.exe is only 30 kilobytes in size, doesn’t require any 3rd party libraries or frameworks (like .NET to run) and doesn’t require elevated administrator privileges (unlike regedit.exe). You can uninstall it from you machine at any time just by deleting the file.

Or you can do it manually:

  1. Start regedit.exe
  2. Navigate to Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer
  3. Set RPEnabled value to 0
  4. To enable Metro UI, Start menu and Ribbon interface in Explorer back – set the value back to 1
