Metro Social is a free Facebook app for Windows 8 PCs and mobile devices. It is designed to fit into the “metro” look and feel of Windows 8. There are a lot of Facebook apps out there, and many are not really much to speak of, but Metro Social has the potential to excel in the Windows 8 app marketplace.
Metro Social is fast! The Facebook apps for the iPhone and iPad are so slow and clunky.
When you open Metro Social, it requests that you log in to your account, and then again to access the mobile features. The app provides instructions for logging in and explains why it requests double log ins.
After the initial set up, Metro Social displays your profile, newsfeed, friends, etc across the screen. Each entry is an active tile that you can click or tap to enlarge. Since it is a different set up than what I’m used to, it took me a few minutes to get acquainted and find everything.
There are a few features missing. I couldn’t find an RSVP button in the event invitations, or the Facebook chat. The best way to find these is to view the web version within the app. The web option is available in the taskbar along with the newsfeed, and other major Facebook features. Hopefully, in the future the missing features will be available in the app itself and won’t require viewing the web interface, but I’m glad that the app developers offer this workaround.
Metro Social has mixed reviews. Two of the biggest complaints were about logging in twice and the app freezing. I didn’t get any freezing or missing tiles, so it looks like the app has been updated since these reviews were written. I think Metro Social is off to a good start and fits in well with the Windows 8 UI. With a few improvements here and there, it will be a great option for those looking for a Windows 8 Facebook app.
